JAMES MILLAR – MIXING ENGINEER

James Millar is a freelance mixing engineer and mastering engineer. After obtaining his Advanced Diploma in Sound Production at RMIT University, James has hit the ground running since entering the industry in 2011. He started out in Los Angeles, working alongside renowned engineer Jack Jospeh Puig. He then went on to independently mix and record several projects for Robbie Williams.

In the 13 years since, James has worked with an impressive array of artists across a wide range of genres. Thanks to this, he is uniquely placed to ensure your song sounds the best it possibly can. So whether your music is played on streaming, radio or in a club or arena, it will always translate perfectly.

Working as a freelance mixing engineer has also given James experience in a wide range of studio environments. This includes the iconic East West studios in Hollywood to Question De Son studio in Paris.

James believes in a collaborative approach to mixing and works directly with artists and clients to ensure their creative vision is fully achieved.

F.A.Q

If you can’t find the answer to your question below, please get in touch.

Do you do any live mixing?

I have in the past (see Client Liaison @ Splendour In The Grass, 2015 below). However these days I am focused on being a mixing engineer and mastering engineer. As a result, I do the majority of my work in the studio.

What gear do you use?
DAW: ProTools, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live
Plugins: Full suite of high end plugins (for mixing and mastering) including the Universal Audio DSP, FabFilter, iZotope, Slate Digital, Waves etc.

– Monitors: Dynaudio BM 6A (classic), Neumann KH120AG and
  Auratone 5C Mixcubes
– Audio Technica ATH-M50 monitor headphones
– Dangerous Music Monitor-ST monitoring system
– Universal Audio Apollo x6 interface
– Universal Audio Satellite Quad
– Neve 1073 DPA preamp
– Universal Audio 2-1176 compressor
– Mackie Onyx 1640i mixer
What are your rates?

I work with artists and projects of any size.

My actual rates will depend on several factors. This may include the nature of your project, your time frame and scope of services required. Discounted bulk/ ongoing packages are also available.

Send me an email with as much information as possible and I’ll work with you to get the best possible result for your time and budget.

Are you open to collaborating with other creatives?

Absolutely, hit me up.

Do you work with international artists?

Yes, the majority of artists that I work with today are international.

How should I send my files?

I accept files in the following formats:
ProTools session
Logic X session
Rendered files

I prefer to receive the files in session format. That way I’m starting from exactly where you’re hearing the song and I can refer back to it/ see how different elements are working with each other as well.

(It also cuts down on having to spend the first couple of hours of mixing getting it back to where you had it in the first place!)

If you are submitting a session, please make sure all Instruments have been committed/ rendered. If you have other plugins in your session, you can leave them on (if there are any I don’t have, we can talk about how best to proceed). Likewise with panning and volume automation.

Files should be sent via WeTransfer, or a Dropbox/ Google Drive folder.
If you have any questions about how to submit your files, please get in contact.
