THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON AUSTRALIA’S RECORDING INDUSTRY

Being a mixing engineer has it’s challenges at the best of time. But as the pandemic continues into a second year, disruptions and changes to the way we work and interact with others have impacted every industry. The music industry however has been hit particularly hard. The various public health rules and restrictions that have been put in place to combat COVID-19 have forced us all to change the way we work.

For artists, the loss of income from live performances has meant finding new ways to make money from their music. It has also forced them to work out how to connect with their fans away from the stage. For recording and mixing engineers, there have been other challenges.

I sat down with Mixdown Magazine and talked a bit about how the pandemic has effected the way I work as a mixing engineer. We discussed topics such as mixing songs with artists remotely, the normalisation of the home studio and the potential silver-linings that may come with the changes we’ve all had to make in recent times.

COVID-19 has thrown up its challenges, but it has also allowed me more time to focus on what is important, grow my skillset and learn how to engage with artists on another level.
